Edinburgh Previews: Ahir Shah & Matt Forde
Winner of the 2014 award for Best Show at the Leicester Comedy Festival, Ahir Shah is, at the time of writing, a funny and extant comedian. His sharp, intellectual brand of stand-up features a blend of emotional frankness, poetic language, and jokes.
In August 2015, Ahir debuted his new show, Distant, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe which saw huge critical success and packed houses. A show about the importance of faraway things, Ahir turns his incisive brand of comedy to topics spanning World War One, cigarettes, vegetarianism, Islamism, capitalism, politics, climate change, love, and pirates.
Ahir began occasionally doing stand-up at fifteen (i.e. too young), and over the course of the last nine years the development of his erudite, philosophical style has seen his position in the circuit skyrocket from “curiosity” to “interloper”.
“Excellent…A questing argument against compassion fatigue and a generational cri de coeur” – The Guardian
“Passionate, poetic and powerfully funny” – The List
Matt is one of the country’s most in-demand satirists appearing on Have I Got News For You (BBC One), Rory Bremner’s Coalition Report (BBC Two), 8 out of 10 Cats (Channel 4), Question Time (BBC One), This Week (BBC One) and Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC Three). He also starred alongside Jon Richardson in Channel 4’s Jon Richardson Grows Up.
2015 saw Matt take his sell-out, critically-acclaimed 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe show 24-Hour Political Party People for a week-long run at the Soho Theatre as well as tour it nationwide.
Matt’s monthly residency in London, The Political Party, sells-out Westminster’s St James’ Theatre. Alongside Matt’s trademark topical current affairs stand-up, the show brings Parliament to life as he interviews some of politics’ most notorious figures, including Alastair Campbell, Nigel Farage, Michael Portillo, Dame Tessa Jowell, John Prescott, Alan Johnson, David Davis, Stella Creasy, Jack Straw and George Galloway.
As a writer Matt has worked regularly on 8 out of 10 Cats (C4), Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC3), The Last Leg (C4) and Stand Up for the Week (C4).
