On February 24th, Echobelly will release the title track from their forthcoming new album, Anarchy & Alchemy.

Anarchy & Alchemy signals a change in direction for the band, with a more sophisticated and brooding jazz-tinged sound, in places coming on like an alternative Bond theme. Recorded by Echobelly founders Sonya Aurora Madan and Glenn Johansson, with their new rhythm section, Anarchy & Alchemy explores many esoteric themes, including what the ancient Sanksrit scriptures call ‘Kali Yuga’. “We live in an amazing, chaotic, anarchic and magical time of speeding up, where the securities of the past no longer apply and every decade is unrecognizable in terms of technogical advances,” says Sonya. “Yet human qualities will probably never change and it’s the essence of what must change and what never changes that’s inspired this song and the forthcoming Echobelly album.”

Sonya wrote the lyric using the psychological technique of word play, starting with ‘anarchy’ and thinking of an association, then an association of that word and so on, moving on to ‘alchemy’ for the second verse. Regarding the chorus, Sonya says, “no word could do justice to the mood I wanted so I left it deliberately guttural and devoid of syntax, like Edvard Munch’s The Scream, but always hoping for a happy ending.”

Since the release of the last Echobelly album, 2006’s Gravity Pulls, Sonya and Glenn have continued to write, and in 2009 moved into another direction with two mini acoustic albums, recorded under the banner of Clam Of Zero. In the spring of 2015, an old friend suggest they play a proper Echobelly show to see the lay of the land, and to their surprise and delight, the result was a sold-out Scala show in October 2015. Fuelling their thirst to resurrect the band proper, they started writing again and found ideas and songs poured out of them. The resulting album will be released in early 2017.
