ONE INCH BADGE PRESENTS: NICOLE ATKINS + SUPPORT
Nicole Atkins has released her new album Goodnight Rhonda Lee via Single Lock Records. The album was recorded with Fort Worth, TX’s Nile City Sound, a.k.a. producers Austin Jenkins, Josh Block, and Chris Vivion (Leon Bridges), with additional mixing by Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes).
A vintage soul album inspired by legendary artists like Dusty Springfield, Candi Staton, Loretta Lynn and Janis Joplin, Goodnight, Rhonda Lee was first heralded last November with the release of A Little Crazy, available now on Spotify, iTunes and Bandcamp. Co-written with Chris Isaak, the track premiered via Brooklyn Vegan, which hailed it as ‘a delicate, soulful ballad.’ In addition, Atkins’s stellar live performance of A Little Crazy was an undisputed highlight of Oscar® winner Cameron Crowe’s 2016 Showtime series, Roadies.
‘Though Atkins’ album is animated by a spirit of impulsiveness, it’s also very much the product of artful craft, burnished not only by the symphonic production, but her Brill Building-style grasp of rich melody and sturdy structure.’ NPR First Listen (July 2017)
‘Aching pop-soul bathed in the nostalgic warmth of another era… [with] imprints of Dusty Springfield or Carol King… Atkins is also possessed with a singular, torchy voice that floods these songs with genuine fervor.’ Uncut (June 2017)
‘Channeling Dusty Springfield… sounds like the soundtrack to a long-lost Mad Men scene. ‘ NME
‘… stark, frank songwriting, which is underpinned with glorious soul music that evokes classic Stax and Chess recordings.’ Drowned In Sound (8 out of 10)
‘Opening at full tilt with ‘A Little Crazy’, a kohl-eyed Patsy Clineish tragic belter, Atkins’ fourth album sets a high bar. But she clears it with soulful, oddball, Jersey-girl-in-Nashville aplomb.’ Mojo (4 out of 5)
