As we learn more the more tools we have. The more tools we have, the greater the capacity to understand. The icecaps wouldn’t be melting were it not for our capacity to measure the process so exactly. We wouldn’t have been alone so long and quickly were it not for how trellised our vapour trails had become. As we burn our candle brighter and brighter, it brings into sharper and ever more brilliant focus the rate at which it is being burned. We cannot look at it. Our eyes were not designed to process the brilliance of so much light. I read somewhere that Vincent Van Gogh used to eat his paints. They were lead-based and poisonous. He used to eat them in fits of anguish. His paints were the tools of his salvation and emancipation but also the harbingers of his diminishment. How do you extract one from the other? The paint from the painter? The person from the time? The mind from a need for more? The processes we have forged of security through surplus, balm for an uncertain future, hasten and make clear an avoidable conclusion. Is it a quirk of our nature? Some sort of cosmic joke?
