WINNER Saboteur Award for Best Spoken Word Performer 2021

Back in Georgian times we got our news from poetry. Before papers, broadcasts or the internet, ballad sellers would hawk their doggerel on street corners for a penny. Scandalous affairs, grisly crimes, and colourful characters were brought to life in rhyming verse long before the first tabloid was printed. Now Luke Wright has rewritten the very best of these stories for the modern ear: take a trip through the Drury Lane gin shops with the Boxing Baroness; filch oysters by the dozen with Dando, the celebrated gormandiser; and escape the Bull Ring with Jemmy the Rockman. Expect scandal, excess, and beautiful flawed humanity.

Luke is cementing his reputation as the hardest working man in poetry by taking no less than three shows on tour in the coming months – as well as making guest appearances on many of John Cooper Clarke’s tour dates.

Luke Wright has been a professional poet for over 20 years and is now is established as one of Britain’s top stand-up poets. He is credited as being one of the chief architects of the now thriving spoken word scene. Flamboyant, political and riotously funny, Wright’s inventive shows are enjoyed by thousands of people across the world every year. He is the author of three full collections and three pamphlets of poetry and three verse plays. He is the winner of a Fringe First, a Stage Award for Acting Excellence, and three Saboteur Awards.

He has received praise from fellow poets as diverse as Patti Smith, Libertine Carl Barat (he is often seen as MC for Libertines gigs), Simon Armitage and Ian McMillan and frequently shares a stage with John Cooper Clarke and  is a brilliantly witty and erudite interviewee.

“His performances rumble with rage, passion and humour. They are also peppered with brilliantly smart observations. You will leave his show brimming with energy, heart pounding and brain whirring.” Guardian

“Wright’s full-throated reverie is spellbinding.” The Mirror
