Environmental sustainability

Logo

We are always aiming to be more environmentally sustainable as a business. While acknowledging there’s room for improvement, there are many ways in which we’re already using green alternatives throughout our venue. Please click the topic below to read more.

We have installed a 32kW Solar Array, on the roof of our building, which provides the majority of our energy. Our other energy is provided by companies that offer renewable energy sources. Our gas is carbon neutral and 10% is renewable biogas, generated from organic matter like food and farm waste here in Britain.

We use local recycling company Recorra and currently recycle more than double the city’s average, including many items that most companies do not recycle. We recycle enough paper and card to save approximately 48 trees per year and our paper waste is made into packaging by Recorra and returned to public use. Annually we have removed over 30,000kg of carbon from being released into the environment.

We use glass to serve our drinks at all seated shows, but our licence stipulates we must serve in plastic for all standing events. We now use multiple use plastic cups to eliminate plastic waste. We have also stopped giving out plastic straws with our drinks.

Our main beer supplier is family-owned brewery Shepherd Neame, based in the South-East. Their locality greatly reduces the carbon footprint of our beer deliveries. Shepheard Neame still use an ancient spring beneath their brewery and their onsite Water Recovery Plant recycles their wastewater. 97% of the grain and hops they use is recycled into animal feed for local farms. Our guest taps (both ale and lager) are always Sussex based brewers such as; Abyss, Big Hug Brewing, Gunn BreweryUnbarredGood Things Brewery and more.

We offer an a range of plant-based food and vegan options and source our food from local businesses where possible, these include; Red RoasterReal PatisserieThe CheesemanBrighton Sausage Company, Gelato Gusto and more. All our meat is sourced from farms in the Home Counties. All the oil we use in our kitchen is recycled into renewable energy in the form of biodiesel.

We bank with Triodos, known as the world’s most sustainable bank. They are committed to ‘making the world a better place’ and are partners with Friends of the Earth. Triodos will only make investments in organisations designed to make a positive impact on society, culture and the environment.

We offer paperless ticketing. We use hand dryers rather than paper towels, in our toilets, as our electricity is renewable.

We use Evans cleaning products, chosen because they develop chemicals that have the minimum environmental impact on the planet. They use the GreenTick system, which demonstrates which products can be proven to have the least impact and these are the products we use.

For the majority of our printed, promotional materials we use Treetop Design and Print, an eco-friendly printing company based in Crawley, West Sussex. Treetop only use inks made from renewable resources, are FSC® and vegan certified and any material that cannot be recycled is either reused, recovered or disposed of responsibly.

Our EarthPositive® t-shirts are sourced are screenprinted by Nico at Print Yard Studio, who put sustainability at the forefront of the studio:

  • All inks are water-based, Soil Association Approved, 100% solvent-free, and vegan.
  • All screen-printing is done by hand.
  • Misprints are kept and used for clean up and test prints.
  • Packaging is reused where possible.
  • Left-over stock is donated to organisations such as Leiho, who provide clothing to homeless charities.

What people are saying...

Excellent venue… have never laughed so much! Nice bar food as well!

Great experience. Staff were friendly and helpful , venue excellent.

Thanks very much to all of you for hosting this – it was a great night!

It was my first time there, and definitely not the last…. the members of staff were helpful and welcoming…the venue was very nice.

Fantastic comedy venue, very accommodating to my disability requirements. Never seen a bad comedy show there yet … really good up and coming acts.

What a superb venue. I have been several times. Always a warm welcome and a safe space to enjoy the artists that are more “left field” than other more mainstream venues.

Great time, bar staff were amazing. First time here and will definitely be back. Have been to many comedy clubs in Brighton and this has been the best so far!

Amazing experience with the Komedia staff. They have gone above and beyond to cater for my disabilities at a show on June 5th, making sure I am seated correctly and can easily access the area. Very rare experience nowadays. Thank you again for all your help!

Just the best place if you like comedy. The food is great, the show room cozy and personable. Excellent atmosphere every time. An amazing place to watch a live show. Highly recommended!

Always something interesting happening at Komedia. Probably the venue I find myself at most frequently due to the eclectic mix of acts, comedy, music, club nights, cabaret and random silliness! Feels like the heart of Brighton!

I had not been to this venue before and I have to say that I was very impressed… All the staff I encountered were friendly, helpful and cheerful. I will certainly return!!

This venue’s accessibility information on their website is outstanding. As an autistic wheelchair user it was so amazing to be able to see the layout/3D view of the whole venue… If more venues followed Komedia’s example the world would be a much better place!
