WHAT SPELLBOUND IS ABOUT

Firmly established as one of Brighton’s best-loved monthly clubs, SPELLBOUND – The Alternative 80s Night – happens on (usually) the third Saturday of every month in the Studio Bar of Komedia. DJs SIMON PRICE (Stay Beautiful) & JAYNEY BLAMBLAM (Total Blam Blam) play Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, Alternative Rock, New Wave, Indie Rock, Synth and Ska classics 1979-1989.

It’s just like walking into your actual local alternative club at any random point in the 80s, right down to the smoke and the snakebite. A proper drinking and dancing session with a wonderfully mixed crowd of grown-ups who remember it all from first time around and young ‘uns just discovering it afresh. And look out for the Eighties visuals to help with the Time Travel…

THE SPELLBOUND GOTH SPECIAL – SAT 18TH JAN!

Hey Spellbounders! Back by popular demand, the long-awaited return of the SPELLBOUND GOTH SPECIAL will happen on SATURDAY 18th JANUARY! Hairspray? Check. Eyeliner? Check. White greasepaint? Check. Entirely black wardrobe (with possible concessions made to a touch of purple, or frilly white lace)? Check. This month, instead of playing one or two of The Sisters Of Mercy’s greatest hits, we’ll play pretty much ALL of them. Same goes for Siouxsie And The Banshees, Bauhaus and The Cramps, plus the best of The Cult and The Cure’s, shall we say, darker periods. This will be the Spellbound where if you ask for, I dunno, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry or Lords Of The New Church or March Violets, we’ll actually say “Yeah, OK!” instead of “Um, maybe…” You can also expect to hear the likes of Alien Sex Fiend, Specimen, Fields Of The Nephilim, X-Mal Deutschland, The Birthday Party, Joy Division, Danielle Dax, The Damned, Christian Death, Theatre Of Hate, Skeletal Family, Ghost Dance, Sex Gang Children, DAF, The Mission, The Chameleons, James Ray & The Performance, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, The Bolshoi, The Creatures, Gene Loves Jezebel, Nitzer Ebb, Virgin Prunes, Killing Joke, Front 242 etc etc (and we’ll ensure that whatever non-gothic stuff we play is suitably Batcave-friendly in mood). And don’t sit in front of the smoke machine, because it’ll very much be in use. Alright, let’s get gothed out of our tiny minds!

The return of THE SPELLBOUND CURE SPECIAL – SAT 21 JUN!

Our own Simon Price’s acclaimed book, CUREPEDIA – AN A-Z OF THE CURE, now updated to include Songs Of A Lost World, is coming out in paperback (published by White Rabbit https://www.whiterabbitbooks.co.uk), and we’re celebrating with the return of The Spellbound Cure Special!

This will mean ONE HOUR OF PURE CURE at the very start from 9pm-10pm (deep cuts and fan favourites), then THE CURE’S GREATEST HITS scattered through the rest of the night, mixed in with Spellbound’s usual Alternative 80s anthems. And there will be a chance to WIN A COPY of Curepedia! So backcomb your hair, draw your eyeliner on thick, smear your lippy, step into your big puffy trainers, and join us down on the dancefloor from 9pm…

THE SPELLBOUND SYNTH SPECIAL – SAT 16 AUG!

Spellbound is Brighton’s biggest and best-loved Alternative 80s night, and the annual SPELLBOUND SYNTH SPECIAL has become one of the club’s most popular events. For six (yes, six!) bleeptastic hours, DJs SIMON PRICE (Stay Beautiful) & JAYNEY BLAMBLAM (Total Blam Blam) will be honouring all those pioneers who prodded Korgs, Rolands, Moogs, Fairlights, Casios and Yamahas through the 1980s. Every record you hear, all night, will either be entirely electronic or prominently feature synthesizers and drum machines.

THE SPELLBOUND HALLOWE’EN PARTY – FRI 31 OCT!

Spellbound is Brighton’s longest-running and best-loved Alternative 80s night, and its Hallowe’en Party is always the biggest in town. And, for the first time in a while, it’s happening on actual Hallowe’en! DJs Simon Price & Jayney BlamBlam spin a mix of Alt-80s monster tunes and all-time Hallowe’en anthems for a very dressed-up crowd.

Expect party-friendly bangers by The Cure, Siouxsie, The Cramps, Billy Idol, Dead Or Alive, Kate Bush, Soft Cell, The Cult, Depeche Mode etc but also “The Monster Mash”, “Thriller”, “The Time Warp”, “Ghostbusters” and all the other creepy classics you wanna hear.

There is also fiery cabaret from Laura Loops, retro horror video mash-ups on the screens, and all the usual Hallowe’en fun and nonsense.

This party happens in the Main Room of Komedia Brighton on Gardner St, Brighton from 11pm-3am. The first fifty Early Bird tickets are £8 from the Komedia Box Office: https://www.komedia.co.uk/shows/spellbound

Now the only question is: what to wear?

What people are saying...

I’m having a Madonna day today and it’s bringing back just how EPIC Madonna night was. I think it was the most fun I’ve had in my 30s, and I’m nearly 40.

We came here on the night of Brighton pride and had an amazing time. Lovely, clean venue with really friendly staff and saw it was clearly accessible.

Great place to see bands. Not too big . Not too small. Excellent views plus TV screens in all areas. Disabled parking in the street behind. Good eateries locally after gig.

Komedia continues to have club nights that suit all ages. It is a brighton institution that should be revered.
